Fans of the classic era Sonic games should feel right at home in terms of imagery and structure, while comic fans can jump in and enjoy a new untold chapter in the larger story. We definitely have the long-time fans in mind for this issue, however, the way the story is told, just about anyone can pick up the issue and enjoy it as is. IGN: Given the name of this issue and the fact that it takes place after the events of Sonic & Knuckles, are you specifically targeting fans of the 16-bit Sonic games here? Is it intended to be accessible for those who played those games but maybe have never picked up a Sonic comic? Vincent Lovallo: Exactly. Check out a preview of the two issues below and then scroll down to see what Lovallo had to say. Lovallo also revealed to us that Sonic: Mega Drive will be followed up by a new special later this year called Sonic: Mega Drive - The Next Level. Eggman is trying to build a new engine of destruction: the MEGADRIVE, and it’s up to Sonic and his whole crew to stop the mad doctor and save the day! Join Sonic and his friends in this special commemorative issue celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Blue Blur! We recently had the chance to chat with editor Vincent Lovallo about revisiting Sonic's classic roots and whether this one-shot might impact Archie's ongoing Sonic comic. Archie's official solicitation for the issue reads: Sonic spins into a brand new, Classic-styled, SUPER SPECIAL one-shot "Mega Drive"! Join Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy Rose on a brand new adventure-set after the fall of the Death Egg! The nefarious Dr. Sonic: Mega Drive #1 is written by Ian Flynn and drawn by Tyson Hesse.

It's no coincidence that this issue is named after the international version of the Sega Genesis console, as it pays homage to that classic, 16-bit era and features a story set after the events of Sonic & Knuckles. This July, Archie Comics will be publishing a new one-shot special called Sonic: Mega Drive #1. But comic book fans also have a lot to look forward to. With 2016 being the 25th anniversary of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, fans can expect a lot of major new Sonic projects across various forms of media (including today's announcement that Sonic will be joining the growing lineup of characters in Lego Dimensions).
